Education

To begin your path as a NDT assistant, obtaining a high school diploma or GED will be necessary. Students with interest in pursuing this profession should focus on classes such as biology, chemistry, math and English. Working with patients will require a competent level of communication and interpersonal skill, so taking psychology and sociology classes might also be a good idea.

Neurodiagnostic techs perform tests that help doctors diagnose brain, neurological, or sleep disorders. Performing these tests requires training or education on specialized equipment as well as excellent interpersonal skills to comfort patients. Certification in this field is optional albeit highly recommended. Below are the top two certifying agencies and the certifications they offer.

1. American Association Of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.) certification eligibility

Prior to sitting an AAET R.NCS.T. exam, aspiring NDT assistants must have completed at least 1 year of experience and have taken the NDT program accredited by CAAHEP. Since NDT will not perform biopsy or invasive procedures, if you have an additional superseding certificate that allows invasive exams and interpretation you may submit them. Otherwise, you will have to provide the AAET Attestation Statement to verify that you’re not performing those exams.

Additionally, to enter the certification process, you must also provide a copy of your certification card for Basic Life Support (BLS) for the Healthcare Provider issued by the American Heart Association.

2. American Board Of Registration Of Electroencephalographic And Evoked Potential Technologists (ABRET) certification eligibility

Unlike the AAET R.NCS.T. which only certified participants for 1 type of NDT, the ABRET has 5 certifications you can earn and each will have its own standards:

  • Registered Electroencephalogram Technologist (R. EEG T.)

To qualify and sit for this exam, you must have either graduated from an NDT CAAHEP-accredited program, completed an ABRET-recognized certificate program, earned an associate’s degree or have a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) certification with 1 year of clinical EEG experience.

  • Registered Evoked Potential Technologist (R. EP T.)

For this certification, test takers must have completed CAAHEP-accredited NDT program or an associate’s degree or ABRET EEG certification (R. EEG T.) with two years of clinical neurodiagnostic experience.

  • Certification In Neurophysiologic Intraoperative Monitoring (CNIM)

The standards to take this exam are that participants must complete a CAAHEP accredited program, have an R. EEG T. or R. EP T. certification, a bachelor’s degree, complete an ABRET-recognized certificate program and are certified as a Long Term Monitoring Technologists (CLTM)

The eligible candidates to take this test are the ones that have had one year experience of being an R. EEG T and an extra for long-term monitoring (LTM). Also, they must also be able to provide documentation of 50 LTM cases.

  • Certification Examination For Autonomic Professionals (CAP)

Candidates must qualify under one of two pathways to be eligible for this certification. They either have to finish taking the associate’s degree with 1 year of clinical autonomic testing experience or take 2 years of clinical autonomic testing experience. 

  • Certification for Magnetoencephalography (CMEG)

Eligibility requirements to take this test are having an R. EEG T. or R. EP T. certification, six months of supervised work experience, the MEG certificate and having current CPR or BLS certification.
